Chelsea have completed the signing of Bayer Leverkusen star Andre Schurrle on a five-year-deal.
After representing Germany at both U19 and U21 level, the young
attacker earned his first call-up to the senior squad in November 2010,
while at Mainz, whom he joined from Ludwigshafener in 2009.
He was handed his debut as a late substitute in the friendly
against Sweden and has scored seven goals in 24 appearances for his
country.
In his first season with Leverkusen he scored nine times in 40
appearances and last term he netted 14 in 43 and told the Chelsea
website: “I am so happy now I have signed and it is an honour for me to
play for this club, with this team and for these great fans.
“I am really looking forward to it.” (Sky Sports)
Chelsea have signed a great young player and he will certainly add something to an already impressive squad.

Okoro And The Naked Woman
A naked lady ran into Okoro's taxi.
She told the driver where she was going.
Okoro didn't start the car but he was just starring at the woman over and over again.
The lady looked at him and said, "what's your problem man ? Haven't you seen a naked lady before ?"
Okoro replied "I am not looking at your nakedness, I was just wondering where you kept the money you are going to pay me."

Rendezvous Room: Beverly is such a blabber mouth

After choosing to meet Beverly in the Rendezvous Room earlier this week, Bassey couldn’t wait to sit down and start chatting with his dearest friend Beverly. But the way they carried on wasn’t just a chat, it was old fashioned gossip. But I guess that’s how it goes down in the Rendezvous Room for those who meet there as ‘just friends.’
When the pleasantries were out of the way, they started off on a Dillish note, where Beverly told Bassey about the fact that Dillish was ready to choose him for the Rendezvous until she heard that Bassey didn’t vote for her so she changed her mind and chose Sulu instead. Bassey was rather brutal in his response to this as he said “Dillish is my type of girl but I would never go out with her because I know she’s just looking for a toy. It’s pretty much like what Selly did to Sulu and I don’t want that.”
Next on the topic was Maria and Melvin’s secret relationship as Beverly described it. She said that Maria and Melvin have been an item on the down low for a while now. They must have spent a lot of time hiding this relationship because we certainly didn’t catch wind of it. Beverly further said that Maria left the Diamond House because she wanted to get away from her lover Melvin. If this is true, then clearly there is already trouble in paradise.
The two friends carried on with their long chat while they nibbled on peanuts, chips and champagne. The food was probably why Beverly was talking about everything, either that or she really needed to get away from the House and talk to someone in private. Towards the end of their date, Bassey told her that the Rendezvous Room is for lovers who usually end up kissing. So he spent a few minutes trying to kiss a screaming Beverly. Poor Bassey is looking for some action.
Annabel, Bolt, Dillish, Hakeem, Maria, Natasha and Pokello are up for possible Eviction this week. Vote now to keep your favourite Housemate in the game.

I will convince Cavani to stay at Napoli, says Maggio

The Italy international remains optimistic that his
team-mate could stay at the San Paolo amid ongoing speculation linking
him with a big-money move
Christian Maggio is hopeful of convincing team-mate Edinson Cavani to stay at Napoli for another season amid strong interest from Chelsea, Manchester City and Real Madrid. The Uruguay international recently voiced his frustration with Napoli's €63 million asking price following Aurelio De Laurentiis' comments that interested clubs will have to meet his buy-out clause and demanded face-to-face talks with the club president once he returns from his holiday after the Confederations Cup.
Nevertheless, Maggio is refusing to give up on the prolific attacker and wants Cavani to stay put.
"We have not spoken to each other recently. There has simply not been any time. But we will have a calm and relaxed talk about his situation," Maggio told La Gazzetta dello Sport.
"I don't know yet when we will meet, but we have always had a good relationship. I will try to convince him to stay put. It's then up to him to make a decision, but I obviously want him to stay at Napoli."
The 26-year-old Cavani's current Napoli deal is due to expire in the summer of 2017.
Burial site: Mandela family members go to court

As Nelson Mandela remained in critical
condition in hospital yesterday, a family feud over where the
94-year-old former president should be buried went to court, according
to South Africa’s national broadcaster.
Mandela’s oldest daughter, Makaziwe, and
15 other family members have pressed a court application to get
Mandela’s grandson to return the bodies of three of Mandela’s children
to their original graves in the eastern rural village of Qunu, according
to the SABC.
The grandson, Mandla Mandela,
acknowledges having reburied the three bodies 20 kilometres away in the
Mvezo village, where he plans to create a Mandela shrine, hotel and
soccer stadium, according to the South African Press Association.
Grandson Mandla Mandela has until today to respond to the court filing, reports said.
The anti-apartheid leader built his
retirement home in Qunu and was living there until his repeated
hospitalizations which started at the end of last year. Nelson Mandela
attended the burial of his son at the family plot in Qunu in 2005, and
it was widely expected that the leader himself will be buried there.
But his grandson exhumed the bodies of
Mandela’s three children and moved them to nearby Mvezo, which is the
former president’s birthplace and where the grandson holds authority as
chief.
Eldest daughter Makaziwe and other
Mandela family members want the family bodies returned to their original
graves in Qunu, according to the reports.
The family court struggle came as Mandela’s ex-wife said that he had improved in recent days, but remained critical.
Winnie Madikizela-Mandela gave the update yesterday while speaking to journalists outside Mandela’s former home in Soweto.
“I’m not a doctor but I can say that
from what he was a few days ago there is great improvement,” said
Madikizela-Mandela, who is a member of South Africa’s Parliament.
Madikizela-Mandela pleaded with the media to “understand the sensitivities and the feeling of the family.”
His daughter Makaziwe Mandela was among
the family members who arrived at the Pretoria hospital yesterday. The
ministers of health and defence also visited, the South African Press
Association reported.
Outside the Pretoria hospital yesterday,
a man flying a drone-like object with a camera attached was led away by
several policemen, adding to an already heightened atmosphere where
well-wishers continue to gather to pray for Mandela.
British Grand Prix: Christian Horner Torro Rosso drivers are in contention to replace Mark Webber
Red Bull Team Principal Christian Horner insists it
is not inevitable that Kimi Raikkonen will partner Sebastian Vettel at
Red Bull next season.
Mark Webber announced his plans to step away from Formula 1 ahead of the British Grand Prix this weekend, and Raikkonen has been installed as the favourite to take over from the Australian.
The Lotus driver has one year left on his contract and has admitted to holding tentative talks with Red Bull already.
Horner revealed earlier today that he has drawn up a three-man shortlist containing Raikkonen, and both Torro Rosso drivers Daniel Ricciardo and Jean-Eric Vergne, as potential replacements for Webber.
But despite the fact that 2007 World Champion Raikkonen, who shares a good relationship with Vettel, is being tipped to replace Webber, Horner remains adamant that the two Torro Rosso drivers are in with a chance of a promotion.
“We’re fortunate that we have a pool of talented young drivers at Torro Rosso to draw upon and of course we will gauge what else is available in the market place and Kimi Raikkonen is a driver we would be foolish to ignore,” he told reporters after Friday practice at the British Grand Prix.
“We’re going to take our time, it’s important that we make the right decision, we don’t need to be in a rush and we’ll evaluate the options that are open to us and try and make the best decision we can.
He added: “Let’s just be clear here, we’re not just looking at Kimi Raikkonen.
“We have Daniel Ricciardo and Jean-Eric Vergne who are true contenders for that seat and we just need to take a bit of time to look at all the options available to us.”
Horner added that he hoped to make an announcement over who will replace Webber in the summer.
Amidst the rumours Lotus chief Eric Boullier says he is fighting to keep hold of the Finn, and says the team’s progression since its inception should be enough to convince him to stay put.
“We obviously want to keep Kimi, he will decide what is best for him,” he said. “He knows what he has with us.”

NGF crisis: Moves to reconcile Amaechi, PDP factions suffer setback

The plan by the Chairman, of the PDP
Governors Forum, Mr. Godswill Akpabio, to reconcile Governor Rotimi
Amaechi of Rivers State with the leadership of the party appears doomed.
The Presidency is said not to be
favourably disposed to any such reconciliation and has thus not given
Akpabio the green light to proceed with the plan.
The position of the Presidency comes
against the backdrop of the snub given the Chairman of the Nigerian
Governors’ Forum (NGF) at the Wednesday “mid-term dinner for
transformation team” in Abuja when security aides to President Goodluck
Jonathan physically prevented the governor from exchanging pleasantries
with the president.
Presidency sources later said the governor got that treatment for “breaching protocol.”
Besides, the Amaechi camp and that of the
factional NGF chairman, Governor Jonah Jang of Plateau State, are
clinging to their claims to the leadership of the NGF.
Sources said yesterday that neither group is interested in any political solution to the crisis rocking the forum.
The Presidency is resolute in its backing for Jang and its antagonism towards Amaechi.
Amaechi and his 19 loyal governors prefer a legal solution to a backdoor approach or political solution.
One of his backers, Governor Babatunde Fashola has gone to court to stop Jang from parading himself as NGF chairman.
Those in the G-16, being led by Governor Jonah Jang, are still laying claim to what they call consensus mandate.
It was gathered that the G-19 governors
backing Amaechi have decided to make the NGF election a barometer for
judging the environment for 2015 poll.
At their meeting on Wednesday, the
governors decided to hold on to Amaechi’s mandate without desecrating
the Office of the President.
It was gathered the same solidarity was taken to the National Economic Council meeting on Thursday.
A governor, who spoke in confidence,
said: “Akpabio’s pronouncement was a mere political statement. Nobody
has approached either Amaechi or any of the governors supporting him for
reconciliation.
“You do not negotiate the conclusive result of a free and fair election. We do not want Amaechi’s mandate to be wished away.
“One of us has also gone to court. Even
if they want reconciliation, they should wait till the court decides on
the authentic winner of the election.
“Nigerians should just await the evidence we will tender in court to prove that Amaechi was actually elected.”
Another source said: “With what happened
in NEC on Thursday, it was obvious that no reconciliation has started.
We are not even anticipating any reconciliation.
“The main problem is that those seeking
reconciliation are those fueling the crisis. Have they lifted the
suspension on Amaechi in the PDP? Let them start the reconciliation from
this point.
“Only some South-South traditional
rulers have tried to intervene in the crisis between President Goodluck
Jonathan and Amaechi, but they could not go far.”
It was gathered that the confidence of
the G-19 is being buoyed by the fact that most foreign missions in the
country have become interested in the NGF matter as they consider it as
an indicator for the 2015 poll.
The First Secretary, Embassy of the
Netherlands, Ms. Anique Claessen, had on Wednesday, said: “If a small
group of 36 cannot agree on and respect the outcome of a democratic
election, what are the prospects for elections involving millions?”
A reliable source said: “Most of these
foreign missions are interested in how a governor with 16 votes can
emerge winner over his colleague with 19 votes.
“As a matter of fact, they have been
raising enquiries over the likelihood of a free and fair poll in 2015
with this kind of electoral environment.
“It will be impossible for the G-19 to give up through an under-the table-negotiation. This will make a mockery of all of us.”
Fresh information also emerged yesterday
that last minute intelligence report made Vice-President Namadi Sambo
to change the free-sitting system at the last meeting of the National
Economic Council.
It was gathered that the presidency had
got wind of the alleged plan by the G-19 governors to walk out if the
reserved NGF chair was conceded to Jang.
“It would be embarrassing for governors
to walk out of the nation’s economic council meeting. That will send a
wrong signal to the outside world and the reputation damage will be
difficult to repair,” one source familiar with the matter said
yesterday.
“Having got intelligence report, the VP adopted naming of seats in alphabetical order. This helped to douse tension.
“Even the expensive jokes cracked by the
governors on the NGF crisis before the meeting started were signs of
what would have happened if either Amaechi or Jang was recognized,” said
a source.

Nigerians in UK Clamour to Invest at Home

Mr. Bimbo Roberts, Chairman, Central Association of Nigerians in the UK, (CANUK), made this remark in London on Friday. It was at the first edition of the Nigerian Diaspora Direct Investment Summit (NDDIS) it jointly organised with CANUK.
The incentives for investments are a five-year tax holiday, profit repatriation and lower Value Added Tax (VAT) rate.
Roberts said a lot of Nigerians in the Diaspora wanted to expand their businesses and targeted home as the best investment destination as new incentives had been put in place by the government.
``Nigerians in the Diaspora want to relocate home to do business. What they need is government's support. They don't want a system without backing. The aim of the NDDIS is to provide the bridge for soft landing. We want to change the focus of Nigerians sending home remittance.
``Rather, we want to encourage them to invest and set up businesses back home. That will also create employment and generate wealth," Roberts said. We are hoping that government will stop chasing foreign direct investment but concentrate on using the Diaspora as a veritable tool for nation building."
Mr. Mustapha Bello, Director-General of the Nigeria Investment Promotion Council (NIPC), said agriculture, services, manufacturing and mining sectors were the main areas of focus for investors.
Bello said there had been an overwhelming response from investors on incentives put in place by government to attract investments.
Strikes by Polytechnics will Continue – ASUP
Polytechnics across the nation remained shut on Friday as the National Executive Council of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) insisted that the strike would continue.
In a voice vote at the end of its 74th NEC meeting held at Federal Polytechnic Oko, Anambra State, the body said it remains committed to the development of the education sector and insisted on the continuation of the ongoing industrial action until the Federal Government fulfills its own part of the bargain.
The union blamed the Federal Government for the closure of polytechnics nationwide, saying the government should honour the agreement signed by both parties in 2010.
Obama Lands in S'Africa Amid Mandela Vigils

US President Barack Obama has landed in South Africa, the second stop in his three-country tour of Africa.
Obama said earlier he did not expect to see former President Nelson Mandela, who is critically ill in hospital.
Leaving Senegal, he told reporters on board Air Force One: "I don't need a photo op."
Meanwhile, Mandela's ex-wife, Winnie Madikizela-Mandela said the former leader had made "a great improvement" in recent days, but was "still unwell".
But she said she felt it would not be right for the US president to visit Mandela while he was in a critical condition.
Correspondents say security is tight in the streets near Mediclinic Heart Hospital in the capital, Pretoria, where the 94-year old is being treated for a lung infection.
Ministers, politicians, Mandela's physician and family members were among those visiting the ex-leader on Friday, his 21st day in hospital.
Several hundred people earlier took to the streets of Pretoria in protest against Obama's foreign policy.
However, the BBC's James Copnall in the city says Obama does have wide support in South Africa.
Obama's plane landed at a military airbase near Pretoria on Friday evening. During his stay, he is scheduled to meet President Jacob Zuma and hold a major speech, correspondents say. He is also expected to visit Robben Island, where Mandela was imprisoned for 18 years.
However Obama said earlier he did not expect to see the ailing ex-leader during his South African trip.
"I don't need a photo op," he said aboard Air Force One after leaving Senegal. "The last thing I want to do is to be in any way obtrusive at a time when the family is concerned with Nelson Mandela's condition."
He went on to say: "I think the main message we'll want to deliver is not directly to him, but to his family - is simply profound gratitude for his leadership all these years, and that the thoughts and prayers of the American people are with him, his family and his country."
Officials and many South Africans have praised his decision to visit South Africa, our correspondent says.
Obama met Mandela in 2005 when he was still a US senator. Both men became the first black presidents of their nations and have received the Nobel Peace Prize.
Looks like Chelsea are going Ruddy crazy and doubling their money for stopper
All eyes are on Jose Mourinho as reports leak that Chelsea are prepared to up their offer for Norwich keeper John Ruddy.
But the Chelsea chief must double that to stand a chance of capturing him.
Mourinho’s offer for the England ace was immediately turned down.
Norwich do not want to sell one of their star players — yet the Special One knows Petr Cech is his only senior keeper at Chelsea.

Transfer Truth: The Truth on Lewandowski to Chelsea
Just when it looked like the saga surrounding Robert Lewandowski's move
from Dortmund was settling down new stories have emerged linking him to
Chelsea.
Lewandowski: Transfer Truth: 15%
We have been tracking the once believable rumour that Lewandowski was on his way to Manchester United for weeks, but after numerous comments from the Dortmund CEO it seemed clear that Lewandowski's desired move to Baren would not be going ahead despite the player initially making comments which stated he was told at some stage last season that the path would be cleared for him to move to Bayern.
After a lot of confusion the Dortmund board initially said that they would definitely not sell him to their biggest rivals, that opened up the possibility that the Pole would look for a way out regardless, and hence a weak link was made between him and United.
A week later the Dortmund board went a stage further and said they would not be selling him at all whilst he still has a year left on his contract.
That seemed to be that, the quotes from the board were very clear and you can read them in full on our article covering whether or not a move to Manchester United was feasible.
The Chelsea Links
It's been a long reported story that Chelsea have been in the hunt for Cavani, and in our hunt for the truth on that story we did dig up quotes from the Naploi president which strongly suggested that contact had been made between the Blues and Napoli regarding Cavani.
As the story emerged we reported how the chances of Cavani moving to West London had started to decrease a little with Rafael Benitez having gone on Radio to deny that there had been any contact from Chelsea and that Napoli had no desire to sell Cavani at any price below his release clause.
With the chances of a Cavani move reducing and Manchester City also entering the race as they look for a replacement for Tevez, it appears the press have made the transfer-window-logical call that Lewandowski could be the new man to chase.
The story which appears to have propagated all of the subsequent speculation was one which appeared in British tabloid The Daily Mirror, the story contains little that would indicate it's based on any factual substance.
Our Truth-o-meter
Given that Lewandowski has repeatedly stated he wants to join Bayern, only some sort of shambolic protest move is likely to bring him to England. With the Bayern board having also stated they will not sell him it seems highly unlikely that there is any chance he could be tempted to join Chelsea, and there is no solid, recent evidence at all which even suggests he is on Chelsea's target list so we're giving this one a truth rating of 15% based purely on the fact that the player has 1 year left on his contract, and that he is clearly unsettled at Dortmund.

FG Recovers N6bn from Abacha Family

The Federal Government has recovered about N5.5 billion (£22.5 million) loot from the family of the late military head of state, General Sani Abacha.
This was disclosed Thursday in Abuja by the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Mohammed Bello Adoke (SAN). He also said negotiations had reached an advanced stage towards recovering another N36.7 billion (€ 175 million) from two of his associates.
Speaking at the 2013 Ministerial Briefing, Adoke said the Ministry of Justice had maintained effective liaison and communications with targeted jurisdictions to keep pace with asset recovery proceedings in those jurisdictions.
The AGF added that the close liaison and negotiations with the Island of Jersey led to the recovery and repatriation of £22.5 million confiscated by the Royal Court of Jersey from Raj Arjandes Bhojwani, an Indian national and an associate of Abacha, on account of his money laundering transactions from Nigeria.
Speaking further, Adoke added that the continued liaison and negotiations with the Principality of Liechtenstein had yielded positive results as the country recently confiscated the sum of € 175 million from the Abacha family and associated companies in that country following a confiscation order by the Supreme Court of Liechtenstein.
Adoke, however, added that the companies involved had filed an appeal against the decision before the European Court of Justice in Strasburg, was concluded, arrangements consistent with the asset recovery provisions of the United Nations Convention against Corruption would be made to repatriate the forfeited sums to Nigeria.
Adoke said that the ministry, in the discharge of its mandate as the focal ministry under the United Nations Convention against Corruption, was in the process of finalising a National Anti-Corruption Strategy (NACS) to fight corruption in the country.
On the campaign against the death sentence, the minister reminded Nigerians that capital punishment was still in force in the country and that the global campaign against the death penalty by Amnesty International and other bodies had not metamorphosed into its abolition in many countries around the world.
He explained that in Nigeria, most of the laws that carried the death penalty were state laws and could not be abolished by the federal government on behalf of the states since the country practices federalism.
On the death sentence passed on Abacha’s former chief of security, Major Hamza Al-Mustapha for the killing of Kudirat Abiola, the minister said it would be subjudice for him to comment on the case, on the grounds that the matter was pending at the Court of Appeal.
“Al-Mustapha was tried and convicted by a Lagos High Court on the charges of killing Kudirat Abiola. It is not for me to comment upon it. His lawyers are in the Court of Appeal for justice to take its normal course,” he explained.
Speaking on the prosecution of the arrested Boko Haram members, the AGF said the federal government had prosecuted 75 cases related to terrorism and the Boko Haram insurgency.
He added that a good number of the terrorism cases were struck out because the accused persons had escaped during the attack on prisons in Bauchi and Maiduguri.
The minister acknowledged that the pace of dispensation of justice in the country was still not as fast as desired, but said considerable improvements had been made in the criminal justice system.
Chelsea agree season long loan to Sevilla for midfielder Marin
Chelsea have sanctioned Germany midfielder Marko Marin to move to Sevilla on a season-long loan.
The 24-year-old arrived at Stamford Bridge last summer, during Roberto Di Matteo's tenure, from Werder Bremen for a fee of around £7m.
Marin went on to make 16 appearances in total last season.

Ancelotti told Real Madrid powerbrokers: Get me Bale!

Real Madrid directors insist president Florentino Perez is serious about bringing Tottenham star Gareth Bale.
Perez knows Real need to make a dramatic signing this summer after Barcelona's stunning swoop for Neymar.
Despite the bluster from Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy and claims Bale won't be sold for less than €100 million, Real directors insist Perez won't take 'no' for an answer.
"We're on it," said one to AS. "The president is the first who wants him and is excited about signing him for Madrid."
During a working lunch yesterday, new coach Carlo Ancelotti discussed signing Bale with his No2 Zinedine Zidane, Perez and GM Jose Angel Sanchez.
"If you can, bring him. He's very good," said the Italian.

John Ogu: The Confederations Cup was a great learning experience

The Academica midfielder is relishing the prospect of
qualifying for the World Cup to once more play against the world's top
sides having gained valuable experience this term
EXCLUSIVEWith the argument still raging whether the Super Eagles had a good tournament in Brazil, one of the protagonists, John Ogu told Goal that the experience will serve the national team very well in the coming months.
Ogu returned with the team following their early exit after two losses to Uruguay and Spain in Brazil last week.
“The Confederations Cup was a great experience for me personally and to my football career and for the team,” Ogu told Goal.
The Academica midfielder started the game against Uruguay and came on for the other two – against Tahiti and Spain. He said playing against Spaniards Xavi and Andres Iniesta was an experience that will help him get better.
“It was great coming on against Spain because I like watching most of their players and playing on the same pitch with them gave me goose bumps.
“This was a great learning experience for me and the other guys. The Eagles will only get better from now on because we now better understand the challenge we will face in 2014 by God’s grace when we come back for the World Cup,” he added.
The 24-year old midfielder said he will be taking some weeks off the game to relax with family and friends and then to pre-season with his Portuguese club.
“Right now, my focus is firmly on playing for Academica next season but you never know in football. I do not worry about transfer speculations.”
Ogu also spoke about the must-win encounter against Malawi in September which will qualify the Eagles for the last round of African qualifiers.
“I think with what we have seen [in Brazil] and with our performances against top sides, we know that we have to win to get to the next stage and that is the only thing on our mind,” Ogu concluded.
PHOTOS: How Kim Kardashian And Kanye West Deceived Everyone

According to reports, Kanye West and Kim Kardashian sent out fake pictures of their new baby, North West, to their friends to avoid the real thing being leaked to the press.
They sent out a bunch of fake and random baby pictures to friends and relatives because they suspected that someone in their circle might want to sell the photos to the media for a lot of money. Sure enough, some of the pictures are now being circulated in the press.
The couple have now come clean to say the pictures you are seeing aren't really that of their new daughter.

Real Madrid to hijack Arsenal, Chelsea moves for Fiorentina’s Jovetic

Fiorentina striker Stevan Jovetic has jumped to the top of Real Madrid’s transfer target list.
The Daily Star suggests that the Montenegro international has emerged as a very strong target for new Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti.
Jovetic has attracted plenty of interest from Arsenal and Chelsea but recent reports suggest he could be headed for the Santiago Bernabeu for around £20million.
Chelsea to see class hitman arrive, if Cavani deal falls through!
Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho will switch his attentions to Robert
Lewandowski if he doesn’t nail down the services of Edinson Cavani.
While the Poland international, who has 12 months left on his current deal, has not hidden his wish to join Bayern Munich, Dortmund are refusing to do further business with their biggest rivals after watching Mario Goetze make the same move earlier this summer.
Chelsea do not believe Dortmund, runners-up to Bayern in last season’s Bundesliga and European Cup, will want to see a £25m asset leave for nothing next summer – assuming that the Germans will be willing to talk terms. (Daily Mirror)
If the Cavani deal doesn’t happen it will be a surprise, but Lewandowski is a brilliant alternative.

Messi lawyers deny settlement report

Both Messis were due to appear at a court hearing in the town of Gava near Barcelona on September 17 in relation to claims the pair, and their financial advisors, had illegally re-routed image rights revenues through offshore tax havens from 2007 through to 2009 to avoid paying the €4.1 million taxes due in Spain on such income.
El Periodico initially reported on Thursday that the Messis' representatives had reached an agreement with the Spanish tax authorities, which would lead to no further action being taken. The Catalan paper later updated its story to say that Messi's people had told its reporters that no deal had yet been agreed regarding the three years in question.
Sources from Messi's legal team told Mundo Deportivo that they were currently still preparing a response to the charges, and it was too early to say if the September 17 court hearing would take place.
Last week, an additional €10 million payment was reportedly agreed to cover Messi's image rights for 2010 and 2011.
Had Messi and his father been found guilty in court, they could have faced up to five years in jail, however custodial sentences are rarely imposed in Spain for such offences.
Other Spanish-based sporting figures including Luis Figo, Davor Suker and tennis player Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario have settled their own tax disputes in recent years.
Messi, who is currently on a visit to Senegal to help publicise the problem of child malaria in that country, and his father Jorge have always maintained that they were fully compliant in all tax affairs.
Jorge pointed out recently that his son paid more than €10 million in taxes each year while complaining of cruel and false reporting of the events.
Forbes say Messi, who turned 26 on June 24, is the tenth best paid sportsperson in the world, with total annual earnings of $41.3 million. $21 million of this figure reportedly comes from companies such as Adidas, Danone, Banc Sabadell, Pepsi, Telefonica, Konami and his club Barcelona, who use the four time world player of the year's image for their own marketing or commercial purposes.
The Blaugrana star has received public backing from club president Sandro Rosell and former president Joan Laporta, who was in charge during the years when the alleged image-rights 'dodge' took place.
Calabar agog with MTN Project Fame’s stars show

It was a weekend of excitement and one that would go down in history as one of Calabar’s finest nights. The products of Nigeria’s most enduring musical reality show last Friday at the Calabar’s Cultural Centre in Cross River State entertained over 10, 000 youths for the concert.
When the event began, the array of rare vocal and stagecraft sent the crowd wild. First to perform was Tolu, the Season 3 finalist, on the reality show, who stirred up memories of his feat in the Academy. He sang Arewa a blend of Yoruba lyrics and English, the young man enthralled the fans with his techniques and stage presence.
Like Tolu, Roy serenaded the capacious hall. He left many wondering why he was not one of the most famous among the rich list of superstars that have come through the Academy. His performance was followed by Tomiwa, Ella and Mike. For Mike, however, there was a proof of long seasons of hardwork to meet the expectations of the fans that have refused to doubt his genius.
Ayo, the last winner of the most productive talent show, also performed and he justified why he was voted the best contestant.
Highlights of the night were Chidinma’s performance, Praiz’s finesse, Iyanya’s rare ability to engage the youths and the guest appearances by two of Nigeria’s finest hip-hop artistes, Wizkid and KCEE.
Each of these artistes performed with admirable uniqueness that brought the crowd to their feet. Starting with Chidinma, the KORA Award winner delighted the audience with a medley of her first album and the current toast of the airwaves, ‘J’aiye’. When she came off the stage, it was clear where she belongs – top of the rank.
Praiz did justice to his uncommon profile as he wowed the crowd with a remix of ‘Stay’ and ‘Rich and Famous’. He parted on an inspiring note by sharing his rags to riches story with the audience.
KCEE mesmerized the crowd with his performance. His dance steps were unique, his songs were well mastered. He left a good memory for Calabar to cherish for a long time.
Iyanya’s appearance on stage set the crowd excited with his Kukere track. He parted with a most dignifying introduction of Nigeria’s hip-hop’s rave of the moment, Wizkid.
Wizkid, MTN’s latest ambassador, turned the concert into a fiesta. Insisting that his fans come closer to the stage, thousands of fanatics left their seats and, before long, it was a live party. He rendered a classic combination with Femi Kuti and the youth’s favourite, ‘Touch your Toes’, among other songs.
The All-Stars concert will hold in Lagos this Saturday, June 29 at Oriental Hotel, in Lekki.
The project of killing Nigeria slowly

By Kanayo Esinulo
The governor of Nigeria’s Niger State, Dr. Babangida Aliyu, who is also known as ‘The Chief Servant’, has been in the news of late. He has been busy educating us on the relationship between terror in some states in Nigeria’s North-east and poverty, and how the unholy connection has helped to turn that part of our country upside down. This relationship, he said, is the fundamental reason why we have the Boko Haram insurgency.
If employment can be created and poverty is given a good fight, the Chief servant of Niger State insists, insurgency in the north of the republic would disappear. That was his thesis. But, quite honestly, can this be a true analysis of the Boko Haram menace all these years? I am aware that unemployment and poverty are not exactly the monopoly of the north. The twin scourges are also there in the south of the republic. And we are aware that both the public and private sector authorities are tackling these twin problems as best they can.
The Chief Servant, I suspect, is probably being economical with the truth or his social research did not dig deep enough. The result was that The Chief Servant may not have been properly briefed. The factual situation is that poverty in the north may, statistically speaking, be more pronounced, but the figures on employable young people with skills and good education without jobs would certainly be more in the south. And I am tempted to ask why the teeming well-educated but unemployed young people in the South or any part of it thereof, have not formed their own variety of Boko Haram, and begin to bomb places of worship, destroy United Nations buildings and facilities, place explosives at school play grounds to kill and maim the innocent? The truth of the matter is that certain identifiable elements in the north have not quite reconciled themselves to the fact that a non-northerner is Nigeria’s number one citizen. Simple! And this explains the north’s present behaviour and bad temper. The north wants political power all the time. Yet in our post-colonial existence as a country, they have enjoyed almost a near monopoly of power, sharing it only with Olusegun Obasanjo when it suited its temperament and grand strategy. And there are examples of this insatiable northern greed for political power and its nebulous streak of treating the south as a conquered people, sometimes behaving like a second coloniser – after colonial Britain. So, my position differs from that of His Excellency, Babangida Aliyu.
The basic truth which The Chief Servant prefers to hide or is shying away from is that the terror group called Boko Haram is bent on conquering substantial areas in the North, dominate it, rule and impose Sharia laws on the portion, if they fail in their primary and major mission of Islamising Nigeria. That is the correct situation on ground. And the extremists survived all these years because they found comfortable sanctuary in Borno and Yobe states, even Kano State. They felt welcome and tolerated in those areas and environment, while their funding from both local and foreign sources provided the necessary oxygen that helped keep the senseless insurgency active and vibrant. Nigerians have not forgotten the names and faces of the northern leaders who dropped hints, at the heat of the 2011 election campaigns, that Nigeria would be made ungovernable if power does not return to the north.
I then ask: What manner and calibre of young men, perhaps educated, would accept to be laced with explosives and sent off to go to a church, office complex or Emir’s palace and detonate them at the right spot and at the right time – knowing fully that their entire existence as human beings would also be blown into shreds as much as those of their targets? Has that fatal or suicidal project provided the needed job opportunities or solved the poverty which The Chief Servant of Niger State claims are the causes of the Boko Haram insurgency? Which sane man would encourage his child or ward to go on a suicide mission or blow up a United Nations building just because he couldn’t find a job or to end persisting poverty. The known ways by which governments and their development partners solve unemployment and attack poverty are, it appears, being tackled by governments at all levels and in partnership with the private sector and international development partners. So, what reasons can ever be tabled to justify the killings that we have witnessed in the north all these years. And the Chief Servant is attributing it to poverty and unemployment.
But for some time, there have been a lot of distractions that I find quite unnecessary, if not outrightly senseless coming from ‘eminently qualified’ sources – like the one attributed to Prof. Ango Abdullahi, a former Vice Chancellor of one of our leading universities, who was quoted recently as saying that the state of emergency in three northern states amounted to a declaration of war. And I ask: when last did the eminent scholar visit his village? The extremists made it difficult for prominent sons and daughters of the north to operate openly in their places. I have a friend from Borno State who swore that “ I will only go home to see my ageing mum when the military has flushed out those very confused boys.” Otherwise, my friend feels good living and working with a bank in Lagos. For him, Maiduguri in Borno State is a no-go area, for now. Yet, Prof. Abdullahi sees the effort of Nigeria’s military to dislodge the extremists as ‘a declaration of war.’ His co-traveller, and both have always belonged to the same school, General Muhammadu Buhari, Nigeria’s former Head of State, is angry and wants to know why Niger Delta militants were rehabilitated and offered opportunities for vocational training and employment, while Boko Haram insurgents are to be fought and defeated.
The militancy that we witnessed in the Niger Delta could be traced to justifiable anger of the youth in the area over a number of issues: oil and gas exploration pollutes their entire environment, making farming and fishing, their principal means of livelihood, impossible. There is no development in the area that compensates for what has been taken away from the area since 1957, and yet it is the hen that lays Nigeria’s golden egg. The young men in the area were angry with their elders for allowing the looting of their natural resources for so long, by a succession of uncaring federal governments that were not only mindless but devoid of any conscience. When it became clear to the boys that the political establishment in (distant) Abuja was not ready to listen, they fought back the best way they knew. Now, I ask again: What cause is Boko Haram pursuing and what specific injustices have been done their area or people to justify what they inflict on their fellow citizens and how do they compensate us for the bad international image the notorious sect brought on Nigeria? How much of their land has been devastated and its environment thoroughly polluted resulting in acid rain? How much of their land has been rendered useless for farming and fishing? I still see truck-loads of their tomatoes and onions arriving Lagos, Port Harcourt, etc. What cause or causes pushed Boko Haram to such level of destruction of human lives and institutions? They attack churches, schools, police barracks, markets, United Nations offices and facilities, etc? What cause are they pursuing? The one most of us know about is their notorious mission to Islamise Nigeria and impose Sharia laws. We are waiting!
If Boko Haram and its sponsors want us to re-draw the map of Nigeria, we should welcome them to it. To my mind, there is nothing particularly sacrosanct about this creation of Lord Lugard and his mistress in 1914. Nothing! And I am always amused and feel entertained when some incurable optimists keep saying that ‘nothing can make Nigeria to break up’. If Soviet Union, Tito’s Yugoslavia and huge Sudan can split, making way for self-determination, peace and harmony, I don’t see the point they are making, giving the way things are going. But for goodness sake, let the senseless killings, carnage and national disgrace stop. Or should we not start considering the option of getting Nigeria back to the more acceptable 1963 constitution?
Esinulo writes from Lagos.

Oil discovered in Lagos

LAGOS—Nigeria’s commercial capital, LAGOS, is on the verge of joining the country’s oil-producing states with the discovery of crude oil in commercial quantities in the coastal state.
Yesterday, Afren Plc and its partner, Lekoil Limited, announced significant oil discovery offshore Dahomey Basin in Lagos, according to the London Stock Exchange.

In separate announcements, the partners said they discovered a significant light oil accumulation based on the results of drilling and wire line logs from a high impact Ogo-1 well, located on the Oil Prospecting Licence, OPL 310 offshore Nigeria.
Afren is optimistic that the discovery is likely to be significantly higher than the anticipated 78 million barrels of oil equivalent (mmboe), which encourages search to further high potential zones.
The discovery is subject to the authentication of the Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR), which is expected in two weeks.
If certified and the partners produce the first barrel of oil, Lagos will become the 11th oil producing state in Nigeria, a club Anambra State joined recently. It will also boost the economy of Lagos, which currently generates about N29 billion internally every month.
The other oil producing states are Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Rivers, Delta, Ondo, Abia, Imo, Edo and Cross River.
Geological studies indicate that the Dahomey Basin is a combination of inland/coastal/offshore basin that cuts across some West African countries including Lagos, Nigeria as well as Southeastern Ghana, Togo and the Republic of Benin.
The basin is said to be separated from the Niger Delta by a surface basement popularly called the Okitipupa Ridge.
“The Ogo-1 well has been drilled to a total measured depth of 10,518 ft (10,402 ft true vertical depth sub sea), and has encountered a gross hydrocarbon section of 524 ft, with 216 ft of net stacked pay.
“The well was targeting 78 mmboe of gross P50 pros

Liverpool complete signing of Sunderland goalkeeper Mignolet

The Belgium international has joined the club for a
fee believed to be in the region of €9.4 million, and is the Reds'
fourth signing of a busy summer transfer window
Liverpool have completed the signing of Sunderland goalkeeper Simon Mignolet on a long-term deal, the club have confirmed. The 25-year-old shot-stopper made 101 appearances in three years for the Black Cats, but has swapped Wearside for Merseyside after penning a "long-term contract" following a successful medical at Melwood.
As reported by Goal, the Belgium international is part of a €50 million transfer splurge by Liverpool, with the club also chasing Henrikh Mkhitaryan following the successful signings of Iago Aspas and Luis Alberto.
Mignolet was one of Sunderland's star performers in a largely unspectacular season for the club, and Reds boss Brendan Rodgers believes the club have acquired a "huge talent".
"I am delighted that we have been able to sign one of the top goalkeepers in the Barclays Premier League," Rodgers told the club's official website.
"Simon will join a club that will give him an opportunity to demonstrate and improve his huge talent."
The signing of Mignolet will add further fuel to the speculation linking current Liverpool No.1 Pepe Reina with a move away from Anfield, but Rodgers has previously insisted the Belgian has been bought to provide competition for the Spaniard.
Sunderland boss Paolo Di Canio was sad to loose the young goalkeeper, and thanked Mignolet for his contribution to the Black Cats' survival bid last season.
"Simon is a fantastic footballer, a fantastic professional and a fantastic lad and I would like to personally thank him for his contribution to the team last season," the Italian head coach told the club's official website.
"He was crucial to what we achieved and he goes with the very best wishes of everyone at the club."
I feel like a loser, admits Balotelli

The Milan star says he is devastated at not being
able to face Spain in the Confederations Cup semi-final following a
strained thigh muscle
Italy striker Mario Balotelli says he "feels like a loser" after injury has deprived him of the opportunity to gain "revenge" over Spain ahead of Thursday's Confederations Cup semi-final.The Milan forward was sent home from Brazil on Monday after sustaining a muscle injury which is likely to sideline him for a number of weeks.
And, speaking to Sky Sport Italia, the Rossoneri star expressed his disappointment having missed the chance to enact "revenge" over la Roja following last summer's 4-0 defeat in the final of the European Championship.
"I feel like a loser having to leave this way. I would have liked to have stayed on with my team-mates, but we have the Champions League playoff round with Milan, so I need to recover for that."
His departure means Alberto Gilardino is likely to deputise, and Juventus midfielder Claudio Marchisio believes the introduction of the Bologna forward will compensate for the absence of the 22-year-old.
He told a press conference: "We will miss Mario because he is a great champion.
"He has matured and it has shown in this Confederations Cup.
"Surely he wanted to play a part in this kind of revenge and we are sad that we will not have him, but we do have players like Gilardino who is very experienced so we are not worried."
Meanwhile, Marchisio, who has featured in all three of his country's games in the competition, believes the Azzurri will go into the clash hopeful of staging an upset after holding the world champions to a 1-1 draw in the Group C curtain-raiser of last summer's European Championship.
"We have to be as good as we were when we faced them in our first game of the European Championship," he added.
"We made it difficult for the world champions so we will not take to the field thinking we have already been beaten on Thursday.
"Spain are the best and they have proved that by winning everything possible, but we happily matched them at times last year and we proved that."
The clash is scheduled to kick off at 21:00 CET.
French Hotshots Eyeing David Luiz

DailyMail now suggest that he has attracted the interest of French moneybags PSG who are on the hunt for a top quality central defender. They are looking at Luiz as they want to pair him with Thiago Silva, who is also currently partnering him for Brazil. They are set to announce former France national team coach Laurent Blanc as their new manager as Carlo Ancelotti puts the finishing touches to his move to Real Madrid, and Blanc has given his orders to clinch the signature of Luiz at the earliest.
They want Luiz to replace his fellow Brazilian compatriot and former Chelsea team-mate Alex, who is nearing a move to his native country in the coming weeks. It is a given that PSG will have to shell out a huge amount of money to have any chance of convincing Chelsea to part with their versatile defender, who is equally adept at playing in the defensive midfield department and who possesses a unique scoring flair in dead ball situations.
Also, it looks like PSG will have it all the more difficult to engineer this deal, given the fact that Barcelona too have sounded out their interest in the 27-year old as they are in dire need to strengthen at the back. Even Jose Mourinho will not be easily convinced to let his star defender leave as he sees him as an integral part in his plans for next season.
Do PSG have any chance of pulling this deal off?
Manchester City agree fee with Juventus for Tevez

The controversial Argentine looks to be close to
ending his stay at the Etihad Stadium and moving to Italy with the Serie
A champions favourites for his signature
Manchester City have agreed a fee with Juventus for striker Carlos Tevez. The Serie A champions will pay €11.8 million for the Argentine forward with an extra €6m to be paid if Juventus win the league and reach the Champions League semi-finals next season.
As revealed by Goal, Juventus have stepped up their efforts to sign the former Manchester United man after beginning formal talks with Manchester City over a potential move.
Real Madrid and AC Milan are also both monitoring the situation and City think Massimiliano Allegri's men may well counter with an offer of their own.
However, while Milan have long held an interest in Tevez they have admitted they may need to sell before they can buy this summer.
Juventus, meanwhile, have also agreed terms with Gonzalo Higuain but look set to miss out on the Real Madrid man after Arsenal officials flew to Madrid to finalise a deal.
Tevez has endured a controversial time at Manchester City, since moving from rivals United in 2009.
Despite helping the club win both the Premier League and the FA Cup during his stay at the Etihad, the striker also spent five months out of the team after clashing with Roberto Mancini during a Champions League match against Bayern Munich.
The striker eventually returned to action for City and was the club's joint top goalscorer last season, with Sergio Aguero, scoring 17 goals from 47 appearances.
Fenerbahce & Besiktas receive European bans

The Europa League semi-finalists have been slapped
with a two-year ban from continental competition, while the Black Eagles
are excluded from next season's Europa League
Uefa has banned Fenerbahce from competing in European competition for two seasons and Besiktas for a season, the governing body confirmed on Tuesday,Both Istanbul giants were embroiled in a match-fixing scandal at the tail-end of the 2010-11 campaign which saw Aykut Kocaman's side's miraculous run to the Super Lig title subject to suspicion.
Besiktas, meanwhile, won the Turkish cup that year on penalties against Istanbul BB, but they soon gave back the trophy when the investigation was announced.
A statement released on Uefa's official website read: "The Uefa Control and Disciplinary Body (CDB) today announced its decisions following the disciplinary proceedings relating to Fenerbahce SK (Turkey), Besiktas JK (Turkey), and FC Steaua Bucuresti (Romania).
The CDB carefully analysed the situation of both Fenerbahçe SK and Beşiktaş JK and has pronounced the following sanctions:
• Besiktas JK is not eligible to participate in the 2013/14 Uefa Europa League.
• Fenerbahce SK is excluded from participating in the next three Uefa club competitions for which it would qualify, including the 2013/14 Uefa Champions League season. The ban for the third season is deferred for a probationary period of five years."
Steaua Bucharest have also been handed a one-year suspension from competing in Uefa competitions, though this has been deferred for five years.
Fener had been due to compete in the Champions League this term after finishing second in the league, with Besiktas coming third.
However, Uefa has exercised its right to ban Fenerbahce for two years, with a further campaign suspended, while Besiktas are to miss one year of continental football.
The Black Eagles also missed the Europa League last term after failing to meet financial requirements.

What is the state of your health?
The state where we are is the state we actually need a transplant. When
early diagnosis was done it was just a case of Renal Infection. Right
now, the two kidneys are gone, but we a running dialysis at the moment.
When did you observe that you have this illness?
It was two years ago, but it was not depreciated to this level. Then it
was a gradual process. it was just like a doctor’s prescription to
control your blood pressure level. we did all that , but having off and
on experience until it got to this stage.
What would you attribute to this ailment?
Most time people tend to atribute kidney problem to drunkenness or
smoking. I was told that it doesn’t have anything to do with that,
because as much as i drink and smoke then, it was casual drinking.
maybe, they offer you a bottle of drink and all that, not that i have to
drink 15 bottles or drink all through the day.
How much do you need for a transplant?
For transplant itself, it varies, because the procedure is $25000. The
whole process of the treatment from pre-process,transplanting and
post-transplanting will cost about $100,000. I(n two years i have spent
up to five million which i have been trying to maintain myself. that is
why it has been kept secret.
When are you going for the transplant?
God willing, i have like 8 to 10 weeks more to get it done. It’s
strange, i still walk around a little. I can’t eat much again, N20 rice
is even enough. I trust God and Nigerians for their financial
assistance.
