Chelsea miss out in transfer pursuit

cavani.jpgSpeculation has been rife in the Football Transfer Tavern all summer about the possible destination of Napoli striker Edinson Cavani with Chelsea though to be major contenders for the Uruguayan’s signature.
But in recent weeks it has become increasingly unlikely and today’s edition of The Express confirms that Cavani will instead join Paris Saint-Germain after he passed a medical ahead of a whopping £55 million switch.
The highly coveted striker, 26, has undertaken a medical with the Parisian club and will be unveiled as a PSG player at a press conference tomorrow after the French club decided to pay him a massive £8.5 million-a-season.
This news comes as another blow for Chelsea and returning boss Jose Mourinho who had outlined a move for Cavani this summer  as he seeks to find a keynote signing to add more goals to his current strikeforce of Demba Ba and Fernando Torres.
Mourinho is also likely to lose out on the signing of Borussia Dortmund ace Robert Lewandowski who looks set to join Bayern Munich next summer while another target, Atletico Madrid striker Radamel Falcao has already joined Monaco.
This leaves the Blues without the top class striker Mourinho craves and that could see the club moving for Aston Villa forward Christian Benteke, 22, who could be available for around £25 million this summer.
